Boris Karloff Onstage in 1948 and 1949. In 1948 and 1949, Karloff survived two Broadway flops, and ironically, one of the few extensive files he saved was on one of them. The Linden Tree, by J.B. Priestley, provided Karloff the role of an old professor, opened in March of 1948 and ran only seven performances. The file includes five 8" x 10" pictures (four of them originals, with photographer's stamp en verso) and two b&w snapshots of the marquee of the Music Box Theatre with Karloff's name billed above the play's title, 13 magazine and newspaper clippings and reviews, and a flyer from the play's Philadelphia opening showing Karloff with the play's producer, Maurice Evans. The Shop at Sly Corner premiered in New York in January 1949, and also lasted only seven performances. This file contains four 3" x 5" photos (with photographer's stamp en verso), six different 8" x 10" shots of Karloff with co-players Ethel Griffies (of Werewolf of London) and Jay Robinson (Caligula in The Robe), and a newspaper clipping regarding Evelyn Karloff visiting the House of Parliament and being received by author E.P. Smith. In Very Fine condition. From the Boris Karloff Estate Collection. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from Sara Karloff Sparkman.
