Description

Boris Karloff Frankenstein Family Photo. A wonderful Golden Age horror discovery! This is a terrific, never-before-published candid shot taken between scenes of Universal's Son of Frankenstein (1939), in which Boris Karloff portrayed his "dear old Monster" for the third and final time in a feature film. The b&w 8" x 10" photo shows Karloff, in complete Monster makeup, seated in the special "Monster chair" Universal had built for him and in which he relaxed between scenes. The star has removed the sheepskin jersey he wore in the film, revealing his suspenders, and is seated with his boots up - showing the unusual design of the boots, which helped give the Monster his leaning-forward stalk. Boris is hosting a visiting family of four and has his arms around two boys - an unknown hand has written on the back in pencil, "On set/family friends the Browns." The background is fascinating too, showing a looming makeshift "forest" and a vigilant studio security guard. Rarely does so unusual and striking a shot emerge to surprise vintage horror fans and this one - featuring Karloff's Frankenstein Monster at peace and with friends - is a stunner. Excellent condition. From the Boris Karloff Estate Collection. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from Sara Karloff Sparkman.
