Description

Boris Karloff Frankenstein Archive. "My dear old Monster," said Boris Karloff affectionately. "I owe him everything. He's my best friend." Universal's Frankenstein, brilliantly directed by James Whale, premiered at Yuletide of 1931, and Karloff's horrific yet heartrending portrayal of the creature catapulted him to world-wide fame. This lot pays homage to the film and performance that made Boris Karloff a living legend, including a shot of the test makeup, 22 different stills, two shots of the Monster portrait Karloff sent to fans in the 1960s, a frame blow-up, a behind-the-scenes shot of Karloff relaxing on the set, a slide of Karloff and Colin Clive, a color shot of the poster, and a color picture of Karloff, circa 1965, fondly looking at a Frankenstein shot on the back cover of Castle of Frankenstein magazine. The lot also includes eight negatives. The stills (not originals) are in Fair to Very Good condition. A wonderful archive devoted to one of the screen's most iconic performances, from the family of the man who truly made Mary Shelley's Monster immortal. From the Boris Karloff Estate Collection. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from Sara Karloff Sparkman.
