Boris Karloff Arsenic and Old Lace Broadway and National Tour Archive. Boris Karloff -- despite severe stage fright -- made American theater history as mad Jonathan Brewster in Arsenic and Old Lace, which opened on Broadway on January 10, 1941, and ran 1,444 performances. As a maniacal killer transformed by a drunken plastic surgeon to look like Boris Karloff, the star romped through a year-and-a-half run in New York, followed by a 66-week national tour, enjoying "the happiest role of my life." This archive includes shots of Karloff with cast members, original publicity photos, shots of the Arsenic company at West Point, where they performed the play Easter Sunday of 1941, street poster ad for the national company; and four negatives. A virtual treasure trove of material on this beloved play. Included too is an additional archive of photos devoted to co-producers/authors Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse and two photocopies of a magazine advertisement Karloff provided during the run of Arsenic for Williams Shaving Cream. Pictures are 8" x 10" or slightly smaller and are in Good to Very Good condition. An incredible collection of dynamic theater history. From the Boris Karloff Estate Collection. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from Sara Karloff Sparkman.
