Description

Boris Karloff and Val Lewton Archive. Karloff hailed RKO Studio's brilliant horror producer Val Lewton as "the man who rescued me from the living dead and restored my soul." This lot honors the star, the producer and the trio of classics Karloff headlined for the dynamic, doomed Lewton. The Body Snatcher boasts Karloff's arguably greatest all-time performance, and the lot includes an original 7.5" x 9" portrait of Boris in the title role, with original snipe attached; three 8" x 10" portraits, and two 8" x 10" scene stills, one with Bela Lugosi and one with Henry Daniell; also a negative of a Karloff full-length portrait. Isle of the Dead offers four shots (one original, with Museum of Modern Art stamp on the reverse) and three negatives; Bedlam contains four shots, all with Museum of Modern Art stamp on the reverse. The Bedlam file also has a photocopy of Karloff's magazine advertisement for Williams shaving cream (the ad "plugs" Bedlam). All stills 8" x 10" unless otherwise noted and in Good to Excellent condition. From the Boris Karloff Estate Collection. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from Sara Karloff Sparkman.
