Description

Boris Karloff 1930s Portraits and Candids. This lot presents Boris Karloff at the peak of his 1930s popularity, in the form of portraits, candids, snapshots, and postcards. Included are 19 different portraits and 17 different candids. Portraits include a matte finish 3" x 5" of the portrait he sent to fans mid-late 1930s (some pinhole damage); candids show him enjoying cricket, floating in his pool, picking fruit, carrying a water can into his greenhouse, smiling on the tennis court, sitting by hearth with wife Dorothy, attending a Hollywood party with Cary Grant, Olivia de Havilland, Gloria Swanson and others, chatting with pal James Cagney at a formal affair, smiling with baby daughter Sara Jane, and so on. Two of the best: Boris relaxing in his cricket jacket, reading with a Bedlington terrier nestled beside him; and Boris, peeking in his farmhouse window, dressed and bearded as...Santa Claus! Wonderful mementoes of the legendary actor, both formal and informal. From the Boris Karloff Estate Collection. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from Sara Karloff Sparkman.
