More Information: Directed by Nicholas Ray (with uncredited work by Guy Green and Andrew Marton), 55 Days at Peking dramatized the 1900 Boxer Rebellion, focusing on the siege of the foreign legations in Beijing. Producer Samuel Bronston recreated the Chinese capital in meticulous detail at his vast Madrid studio complex, constructing full-scale walls, palaces, and streetscapes for the massive battle sequences, with his signature logistical extravagance. Penn, one of the foremost British still photographers, was responsible for the film's publicity images, capturing both the vast scale of Bronston's production and the commanding presence of its stars. The master key set photographs represent the studio's archival reference set—one of only one or two prepared—while the in-camera color transparencies by George Hoyningen-Huene are unique originals, the very source from which all subsequent reproductions derived. Hoyningen-Huene, already celebrated as one of the greatest portrait and fashion photographers of the 20th century, had defined the visual style of Vogue and Vanity Fair in the 1930s and produced iconic portraits of figures such as Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, and Charlie Chaplin.
