Original matte painting from Balalaika. (MGM, 1939) Vintage black and white matte painting accomplished in pencil, pastels, gouache, paste up elements, chalk and charcoal on 28 x 22 in. artist board. Depicting "Café Balalaika" for the musical romance film Balalaika starring Nelson Eddy and Ilona Massey. Featuring the marquee and awning for the front of the famous Balalaika café. Meticulous pinholes have been made in the marquee so that when the painting is illuminated from behind they appear as lights. With handwritten technical specs, scenic notes and paint daubs in the lower border. Exhibiting signs of production-use and age. Overall in vintage, very good condition.
