Description

Vampira Painting by Maila Nurmi. The late Maila Nurmi's portrayal of Vampira as television's first horror host, as well as her appearance in Ed Wood's notorious cult film Plan 9 from Outer Space, had a considerable -- though often overlooked -- impact on pop culture. Vampira was born in 1953 when Nurmi attended choreographer Lester Horton's annual masquerade ball in a costume inspired by Morticia Addams of The Addams Family. Her appearance caught the attention of television producer Hunt Stromberg, Jr., who hired her to host horror movies on L.A.'s KABC-TV. Her late-night show only lasted a few years, but that was long enough to make her a household name and inspire a slew of imitators for decades to come. This Vampira portrait, titled "Entranced in Rushes", was drawn by Nurmi, and is signed and dated 1994 by her in the lower right corner. It is on a 12" x 16" canvas panel and uses (according to her handwritten notes on the reverse) "acrylic, charcoal + various pens & authentic cemetery soil." A frightfully delightful work, in Excellent condition.
