The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming Screenplay with Cast and Crew Signatures, Production Schedule, Production Photographs, Character Portraits and Ticket to Invitational Preview (The Mirisch Corporation, c. 1966). "It's a plot! make the world die laughing!" -poster tagline. Presented is an incredible collection of artifacts from the production of the 1966 war comedy The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming, directed by Norman Jewison. Included is the screenplay owned by actor and storyboard artist Nikita Knatz (1940-2010) from his first job in film, signed by many members of the cast and crew. Knatz was hired for this film for his fluency in the Russian language, having been born in Estonia and lived as a refugee of World War II. The signatures include that of actors Alan Arkin, Eva Marie Saint, Carl Reiner, Brian Keith, Paul Ford, John Philip Law, Jonathan Winters, director Norman Jewison and many more. In addition to the screenplay, included are production photos from the film, two production schedules, and portraits of Police Chief Link Mattocks (played by Brian Keith) and Officer Norman Jonas (Jonathan Winters). These two drawings are rendered in graphite and mixed media on 7.25" x 9.75" illustration board, and both are mounted to a single 17" x 13" matboard, folded in half. There is also a photocopied newspaper review of the film, an invitation to the exclusive invitational preview at the Screen Directors Guild Theater and a printed copy of a self-portrait by Nikita Knatz. This hilarious and topical commentary on the Cold War featured actor Alan Arkin's first major role in a film for which he won that year's Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. The film was a critical and commercial success, and Robert Alden of The New York Times called it "a rousingly funny - and perceptive - motion picture about a desperately unfunny world situation." The pieces in this collection show handling and edge wear and occasional pinholes, and the condition overall is Good.
