Description
Star Trek: The Animated Series Sulu Production Cel Setup (Filmation, c. 1973-74). Asian-American crew member Hikaru Sulu smiles as he mans the helm, in this original hand-painted 2-cel setup. When production began on this animated sequel to the original series, Filmation planned to replace Sulu with a new character, for budgetary reasons; this is why Ensign Chekov was not included in the crew. Feeling the diversity of many races was important to the show, Leonard Nimoy insisted that both George Takei and Nichelle Nichols reprise their original roles, or he would not participate. The large image of Sulu measures 8.5". The setup is placed on a matched print background, for presentation purposes. Minor handling wear, tape and staples along the bottom edge.
