Description
Silent Running (Universal, 1972), Original Final Poster Artwork by George Akimoto. Silent Running (1972) has earned lasting recognition for its pioneering environmental message, helping to inspire a wave of eco-conscious science fiction. Its spare aesthetic and contemplative tone contributed to the introspective sensibility that defined much of 1970s sci-fi cinema. The film's depiction of a lone caretaker and intelligent service drones has echoed in many later sci-fi works. Though only a modest success on release, it has since become a cult classic, praised for its sincerity, technical creativity, and prescient themes. The film's poster, illustrated by George Akimoto, is widely regarded as iconic. Featuring Bruce Dern and one of the drones in a lush forest dome set against the starkness of space, the artwork vividly captures the film's central tension between nature and isolation. Akimoto, a prolific Japanese-American illustrator active during the 1960s and '70s, was known for bringing cinematic drama and emotional nuance to film marketing. His work on Silent Running remains a standout example of his ability to distill a film's mood and meaning into a single, lasting image. Offered here is Akimoto's original final poster artwork, which was acquired by visual effects producer Ronald B. Moore from Silent Running's director Douglas Trumbull. Mixed media on board, measuring 30" x 40" with an illustration size of 28" x 38". Adhesive tape removal in the painted white border has resulted in trivial paint loss which does not impact the illustration itself with additional tape on verso and sketching from artist in light graphite. Otherwise in excellent condition. A rare opportunity to own a foundational piece of science fiction poster artwork. The poster image is for reference only and is not included with this lot. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.Heritage Auctions provides as much information as possible but strongly encourages in-person inspection.
