Description
Samson and Delilah (Paramount, 1949), Edith Head Pair of Costume Sketches for Hedy Lamarr "Delilah" Peacock Gown. Vintage pair of costume sketches by Edith Head rendered in watercolor, gouache, and graphite. The artworks include (1) front view sketch on art board measuring 15" x 20" and (1) back view sketch of cape on heavy art paper measuring 13.25" x 14.5". This iconic gown was designed by Head for Delilah's (Hedy Lamarr) final scenes. Celebrated for its regal design and use of real peacock feathers, the gown, with its detachable cape and flowing train, was one of the key costumes that helped win Head (in collaboration with Dorothy Jeakins, Elois Jenssen, Gile Steele, and twelve others) the Academy Award for "Best Costume Design - Color" in 1950. This achievement was bolstered by her additional win that same year for "Best Costume Design - Black & White" for All About Eve. These stunning sketches are showcased in the comprehensive book Cecil B. DeMille: The Art of the Hollywood Epic. Artworks exhibit production wear, toning, smudging, staining, and minor edge wear.
