Description
Pan's Labyrinth: The Labyrinth of the Faun (Katherine Tegen Books, 2019), Original Illustration Art by Allen Williams. Captain Vidal (Sergi López) examines his father's watch, hands poised with tools, framed by tangled roots and crumbling gears. His obsession with order and time becomes a symbol of inherited cruelty and reflects del Toro's recurring visual motifs of gears and clocks. As Matt Scott Zicree, co-author of Guillermo del Toro: Cabinet of Curiosities - My Notebooks, Collections and Other Obsessions, notes, "Clockwork mechanisms figure prominently" in Pan's Labyrinth, where "the workings of the pocket watch [are] mirrored in the oversize gears of the mill." Del Toro concurs: "We ended up using them in the mill to represent the captain being trapped in his father's watch." On his fascination with gears, the director explains, "They represent, I think, the mechanism of the universe, cyclical nature, the inexorable." Drawn from the movie and reproduced for Pan's Labyrinth: The Labyrinth of the Faun, Allen Williams illustrates the epic dark fantasy novel that transforms del Toro's film into a haunting visual myth.
