Original Elsa Lanchester as "Bride of Frankenstein" Magazine Cover Art for Famous Monsters of Filmland #17 by Basil Gogos (1962). Vintage original cover painting accomplished in pencil and gouache on 15" x 18.5" artist's board. Published as the cover to Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine #17 (May, 1962). The legendary Basil Gogos was the go-to cover artist for publisher James Warren and editor Forrest J Ackerman's seminal monster magazine starting in the 1960s onward. Gogos remains the undisputed king of monster painters, whose work brought black and white classic creatures to vivid, colorful life for a legion of fans right up to the 2000s. This painting remains unsigned, possibly due to James Warren's habit of snatching a painting from an artist in order to fulfill his publishing deadline. A habit Basil Gogos has said made him want to put the publisher through a wall more than a few times. Inscribed on the verso in an unknown hand is various provenance noting the piece was purchased by Kevin Burns from Forest J Ackerman on January 22nd, 1988. The resulting magazine cover is tipped to the board. The painting exhibits previous mounting residue as well as Warren's pencil layout notes on the lower front, blank borders, not affecting artwork. Unsigned. Minor age and soiling with some minor paint loss to upper corners. In vintage Fine condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.
