Nolan Miller Watercolor Sketch for Elizabeth Taylor's Academy Award Gown. Ca. 1985; Watercolor, gouache, pencil, and marker on illustration board.
Nolan Miller always started his work with a portrait to visualize the individual. Here a suggestion of Elizabeth Taylor shows his inspiration for this gown of solid hyacinth blue bugle beads with silver and hyacinth blue leaves that are appliqued. The tops of the leaves are free. This exquisite gown was designed for the Academy Awards, but also was worn to a big party that Nolan gave for the fashion designer Erte in celebration of his 95th birthday. The border is labeled "Elizabeth Taylor - Academy Awards." The illustration is in Fine condition. There is some nicking and age toning along the edges, and corner bumps. There is a scratch in the blue wash and two in the lower right quadrant. The back of the sketch is both stamped and inscribed "Nolan Miller." From the Nolan Miller Collection.
