Game of Thrones Battle of Blackwater Bay Preliminary Concept Painting by William Simpson (HBO, 2011). The Battle of Blackwater Bay, was by this point in season two of Game of Thrones, the largest battle in the War of the Five Kings. It was an attempt by Stannis Baratheon to take King's Landing, and to seize the Iron Throne from King Joffrey. This concept painting by Game of Thrones storyboard artist, William Simpson is the only one ever made for this scene as all other images of it were created in CGI. A note to that effect is handwritten by the artist is on the back of this piece. Mr. Simpson got his start illustrating for comics such as Batman, Judge Dredd and Indiana Jones. This is original hand-painted concept art created in the development of the HBO hit TV series Game of Thrones based on George R. R. Martin's fantasy book series A Song of Ice and Fire. The award-winning show ran for 73 episodes between 2011 and 2019. This painting depicts the infamous Battle of Blackwater Bay rendered in oil and acrylic on 20.75" x 14.5" illustration board which bears the artist's initials and signature in the lower right. It's an incredible image of Lord Hand Tyrion Lannister's unmanned ship filled with bright green wildfire colliding with Stannis's ship. On the back of the board, Mr. Williams has added handwritten notes identifying the illustration which include a second signature. It's a one-of-a-kind masterpiece used in the production of this epic show. The piece shows handling, with bumping to the edges. The condition is Very Good. COA from Heritage Auctions.
