Continental Medieval Painting of Saint Augustine, 15th Century. Oil on wood panel measuring 23.5" x 13.5". Artist unknown, but Northern European School. Although an artwork from the Middle Ages, the verso features production notations on verso, including "CBD" and "CBD 933-D" in addition to two labels bearing numbers: "250" & "139" (label one), and "95" (label two). Almost certainly, this antique artwork was used as set decoration for one of Cecil B. DeMille's films, possibly The Crusades (1935). Exhibits expected age from the spanning centuries, including craquelure, paint loss mostly along edges, wood loss at lower edge and lower and upper right corners, two holes at top and one at lower left edge with cloth and natural fiber reinforcement on verso. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
