Chess Game (1967) by Franco Minei (Italian, born 1922). An 25.5" x 29.5" Oil on canvas, signed at lower left corner and on the reverse along with a declaration of authenticity and old exhibition label giving the title of the work in English. This work hung for many years in the front hall of Lucille Ball's home. Minei was born in Rome and was co-founder of The New Roman School, which at mid-century was a group of young, emerging realist painters whose work had a surreal, neo-romantic flavor. Minei's paintings were profoundly influenced by his studies with the renowned artist, Giorgio De Chirico. In 1970 Minei traveled to New York for an exhibition, fell in love with Manhattan, and decided to make it his permanent home. He painted many works featuring the denizens of New York City in their colorful world, on the street, and in the subways. Minei has exhibited his work widely, in one-man shows, throughout the United States, Europe and South America. His works were and have been collected by many notable figures including: Nelson Rockefeller; Carlos Beistegvi, Paris; Sir Alec Guinness, London; Federico Fellini, Rome; and Vittorio Gassman, Rome. This lot will be accompanied by a letter of provenance from Susie Morton as the widow of Gary Morton, Ms. Ball's second husband. The lot is not offered by the estate of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.
