Description

Butterfield 8 (MGM, 1960), Elizabeth Taylor "Gloria Wandrous" Costume Sketch by Helen Rose. Vintage original costume sketch accomplished in gouache, ink, and graphite on 13.75" x 18.75" MGM artist's board with handwritten notations in pen and pencil reading, "Outfit #8 / Pair skirt with a repeat of one of the selected coats" and "Sc. 67 to 70" along with additional notations for reference. This ensemble of a dark green boatneck sweater, black flannel skirt, and layered blue and purple necklace (without the shawl in the drawing) appears towards the end of the film as Gloria Wandrous (Elizabeth Taylor) prepares to return a stolen fur coat to Weston Liggett (Laurence Harvey). The front and back of the board indicate production number "1765" along with additional pencil notations on the verso including costume fitter's name "Thelma" and dated "12-10-59". Matted to a full 18" x 23.75". Taylor won her first Academy Award for her performance in the film, with costumes designed by the award-winning Helen Rose, following two previous collaborations together. Exhibits signs of wear and age, including foxing and stains, smudges, and stray marks made during production of the sketch. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
