Description
Batman Rolykins Lot with Original Artwork (Marx, 1966). In 1966, Marx released a line of tiny plastic figures with a rolling metal ball inside and called them Rolykins. They produced different lines including Disney characters, Daleks from Doctor Who, and World Cup Willie. Batman and Robin also had their own Rolykins and featured a retail display box all their own. The tiny figures themselves are memorable, however, the small boxes that contained them and the retail display boxes are even harder to find. To date, there is only one original display box known to exist in a private collection. This auction contains both Batman and Robin unused in near mint original boxes as well as a reproduction display box that was copied from the one original box. In addition, original painted artwork of the box cover from Walt Howarth is also included. Mr. Howarth painted the original cover artwork for many "British Annuals" published throughout the 1960's. He also created covers for many other popular character items including toys, scrapbooks, and puzzles. As was his habit, he always painted 2 copies of each so he could submit one to the publisher and keep one for himself as a record. This original piece was the one he kept in his collection and it is nearly identical to the graphic on the package. The painting comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by Walt Howarth before his passing in 2008. The artwork is in excellent condition. The reproduction box is made of thick paper covering a cardboard box and has some waviness due to the adhesive used. There is a sticker marking it as "facsimile" on the back. The figures are new in the boxes and the boxes are in near mint, like-new condition.Auction Info
