Astro Boy (Tezuka Productions, 1980), "Astro Boy" Production Cel with Painted Background. Original hand-painted production cel measuring 10.5" x 9" marked "21 7B A-1" with 3-peg holes across the top edge and featuring the titular heroic robot, Astro Boy, with a determined look on his face. Included with the lot is an original hand-painted background measuring 14.5" x 10" rendered in gouache and acrylic and featuring a dark mechanical tunnel. Created as a manga series in 1952 by Osamu Tezuka, Astro Boy is considered the progenitor of the globally popular Japanese art-from known as anime; the first to embody the design and ethos of the massive artistic movement including the trademark large eyes that took inspiration from early Walt Disney animation. Astro Boy (known in Japan as Tetsuwan Atom) paved the way for countless anime titles after it and is acknowledged by many animation historians to be one of the most culturally-significant cartoons in the history of animation. Cels and painted background display light production and handling wear. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
