Description
Arthur Rackham - "Angry Wife. Mr. and Mrs. Vinegar" from English Fairy Tales Illustration Original Art (Macmillan & Co. Ltd., 1918). Arthur Rackham is universally-acknowledged as one of the finest illustrators of all time, and an inventor of an entire visual language that continues to resonate a century later. Rackham's final illustration for Mr. and Mrs. Vinegar, appearing opposite Page 190 of Hans Christian Anderson's English Fairy Tales, depicts Mr. Vinegar returning home empty-handed, still cheerful. After a series of trades, starting with an overpaid cow and ending with a stick, he faces his wife's frustrated reaction. Rendered in ink and watercolor on paper mounted to cardboard backing with an image area of 6.5" x 8.5"; glass-front framed to 17" x 18.75". Signed by Rackham in the lower left of the image area. Exhibits light handling. Unexamined out of frame. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
