An Orson Welles Oil Painting by Gus Schilling, 1941. Rendered on a canvas board, depicting a 26 year-old Welles with an intent expression on his face, signed in the lower right corner "Gus Schilling / Dec. 1941" -- the artist being the character actor who was good friends with Welles during their New York days when Welles promised him a part in his first motion picture; Welles kept the promise when Schilling was cast as the "Head Waiter" in the 1941 classic, "Citizen Kane;" Schilling went on to have bit parts in other Welles films as well including "The Lady from Shanghai" (1947), "Macbeth" (1948), and "Touch of Evil." (1958); included with a letter from Beatrice Welles indicating she consigned this lot directly to Heritage Auctions.
