A James Whale Oil Painting, 1952. Rendered on canvas in a muted palette, depicting the Rue Du Bac in Paris, signed in the lower right corner "James Whale 52" (possibly in an assistant's hand), back has vintage label affixed to upper left corner from the Festival of Arts (which took place in Laguna Beach, California from July 18 to August 9, 1953) noting that this work was part of the "Art of Celebrities Sponsored by Mrs. Edward G. Robinson," it further notes Whale's name, Pacific Palisades address, title of painting, and its price of $250. (Please note there is evident staining on the lower right side of the canvas, there are two small indentures/damage marks on the lower margin that go through to the cardboard backing, and its original wooden frame is severely cracked and chipped with pieces of wood missing.)
    Matted and Framed: 23" x 26"; Work Only: 13 1/2" x 17 1/2"

James Whale is best remembered for directing the all-time great horror classics "Frankenstein" (Universal, 1931) and "The Bride of Frankenstein" (Universal, 1935) as well as for being the subject of the acclaimed 1998 Lion's Gate Films biopic, "Gods and Monsters," starring Sir Ian McKellen as Whale. The film highlighted Whale's love of painting (which becomes an important plot point in this movie that co-stars Brendan Fraser and Lynn Redgrave) and it went on to win an Academy Award for 'Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published.'
