Description

Miss America official state pageant crown with case. (ca. 1970s) The Miss America Pageant is as much a national tradition as baseball or apple pie. The annual competition features a representative from each state in the union and awards one exceptional woman with scholarships and other prizes. Since its early years, there is no icon more associated with the pageant than the sparkling crown set atop the head of the reigning Miss America. This is a Miss America state pageant crown created by William Schoppy Inc., makers of the crown since the 1930s. After a variety of styles, the current design was formalized in the 1950s featuring four points that stand for Style, Scholarship, Service and Success. Miss America crowns can't be bought, and there are few being given to sponsors. A spare is retained by the jewelry house and pageant officials in case of damage, as in 1971 when winner Phyllis George kicked her 50th anniversary crown down the runway. The 7 in. round x 3 in. tall crown is constructed of cast white metal plated with sterling silver and decorated with over 700 rhinestones. Comes in a custom hinged and latched 7 x 7 x 5 in. wooden box with felted and fitted interior and with the Miss America crest on the exterior lid and blank brass plaque for engraving affixed below. With the Miss America seal engraved on the inner ring of the crown and retaining the Schoppy maker's stickers on the bottom of the box. In vintage fine condition.
