The Wizard of Oz (MGM, 1939), Western Costume Company 50th Anniversary Commemorative Ruby Slippers.
Description
The Wizard of Oz (MGM, 1939), Western Costume Company 50th Anniversary Commemorative Ruby Slippers. In 1989, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the release of The Wizard of Oz, Western Costume Company created a very limited number of commemorative Ruby Slippers using Judy Garland's original "last" (foot-shaped form). Crafted in leather with a full red sequin overlay, the shoes feature 2" heels, a red rhinestone and bugle bead "bow" on the vamp, and a pale-yellow leather lining on the interior, with each shoe bearing a Western Costume Co. Hollywood label with typed inscription, "The Wizard of Oz / 'Dorothy'". As with the original Ruby Slippers from the film, the red leather soles exhibit added orange felt adhered to the toe area (intended to reduce footstep noise during filming). Western Costume Co. had planned a limited edition of 500 pairs to sell for $5,000 each but halted the project after selling less than approximately 25 pairs. Includes a COA signed by Edward Marks, president of Western Costume Company. Includes a 12" x 9.25" x 5" presentation box wrapped in blue and white gingham fabric reminiscent of Judy Garland's "Dorothy Gale" dress from the film. Slippers remain in very fine condition. In December 2024 and June 2025, two pairs of these Western Costume Co. 50th Anniversary Ruby Slippers sold at public auction for $104,000 and $127,500, respectively. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.Heritage Auctions provides as much information as possible but strongly encourages in-person inspection.
