Description

Personal book-bound script for Captain Horatio Hornblower (Warner Bros., 1951), Signed and Inscribed by Director, Raoul Walsh. Vintage original 138-page script dated December 10, 1949 with yellow, pink, and blue revision pages dated to February 16, 1950. Screenplay by Ivan Goff and Ben Roberts, adapted from the novels by C.S. Forester. Signed and inscribed on the front free endpaper by director, Raoul Walsh, to Gregory Peck, "To Greg - and the many happy days on H.M.S. Lydia, Raoul." The present script was custom-bound for Mr. Peck's personal library in full tan calf with Mr. Peck's name stamped in gilt on the front board, boards ruled in gilt. Spine stamped in gilt with two raised bands. With 20 gelatin silver glossy 7.5" x 9" production stills from the film bound-in. Spine is sun faded with light spotting. Corners and spine edges rubbed, boards lightly scuffed. Front board slightly bowed. Very Good.

Warner Bros. acquired the rights to all three swashbuckling Hornblower novels as a star vehicle for Errol Flynn but, though originally intended for him, was ultimately considered too old by the time production started and so Gregory Peck was cast on loan from David O. Selznick, who received a screen credit in the opening titles. It was the studio's most expensive film to produce that year but went on to become their most popular.

Please note that while not a studio presentation script, the present script was custom bound for Mr. Peck's personal library and features his name stamped in gilt on the front board.
