M-G-M originally began production on The Yearling in 1941, with Spencer Tracy as lead and Victor Fleming as director. The book's author, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, was hired as consultant and location scout, but after building the sets and surrounding buildings, upon arrival the cast and crew soon discovered that the area's insects, tropical heat and humidity, made filming conditions impossible and the film was shelved after only three weeks of shooting.

Production was resumed in 1945 after Clarence Brown, responsible for such classic films as The Eagle (1925), Flesh and the Devil (1926), Anna Christie (1930), and Anna Karenina (1935), was appointed director. Brown cast Peck to play the kind-hearted father opposite his screen wife, Jane Wyman. Brown, with a reputation as a perfectionist, averaged 20-21 takes for each of the film's scenes. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Film Editing. The film won Oscars for Best Cinematography, Color and Best Art Direction-Interior Decoration, Color. Peck's performance won him a Golden Globe for Best Actor.

Please note that while not a studio presentation script, the present script was custom bound for Mr. Peck's personal library and features his name stamped in gilt on the front board.
