Description

Jewelry and Vest Made for and Worn by Charlie Chaplin. This very elegant vest and sparkling jewelry once adorned no less than Charlie Chaplin. The vest bears the tag of "Turnbull & Asser Ltd. of Jermyn Street" and the jewelry includes a nine-piece gentleman's set of cuff links, and three two-piece sets of cuff links. All but four of the platinum cuff links are diamond-decorated and two bear Cartier stamps. Lot accompanied by letter from Ilya Salkind, producer of the Superman epics of the 1970s and '80s, dated June 24, 2008 and explaining that Salkind, formerly wed to Jane Chaplin, Chaplin's sixth child, received the jewelry from Jane as a gift in 1994. Jane had inherited them from her mother Oona who died in 1991 (Charlie died in 1977). "The cufflinks referenced by this letter were originally used by Charlie Chaplin...." concludes the letter, signed in blue ink by Salkind. Turnbull & Asser, the clothier that designed the vest, is a distinguished firm established in London in 1885, and, according to its website, "has served successive Princes of Wales, Sir Winston Churchill and countless other leaders and celebrities -- even fictional characters such as James Bond." All pieces survive in Excellent condition. A most elegant lot, worn by a star who -- rather ironically -- was known internationally as "the Little Tramp".
