    Description

Grauman's Chinese Theatre Opening Night Dedication Book, DeMille's The King of Kings. "When Grauman's Chinese Theatre opened the night of May 18, 1927, the film attraction was Cecil B. DeMille's The King of Kings, and the first-nighters received this magnificent deluxe 98-page program, commemorating the theater's grand opening and the film's gala premiere. The beautiful booklet boasts a heavy stock color cover, while the inside pages offer photos of many of the film's players, cast and credits, congratulatory ads, and a fold-out centerpiece detailing Grauman's Glories of the Scriptures, the stage show that served as a prologue for the DeMille epic. Minor staining and creasing on the cover, and the top staple in the binding has come loose; otherwise, it is in overall Very Good condition. From the Archive of Dr. Tilman McLaughlin.

    More Information:

"Tonight is the night of all nights in the entire history of the motion picture industry." The program's welcoming words were hardly hyperbole. When Grauman's Chinese Theatre opened the night of May 18, 1927, the film attraction was Cecil B. DeMille's The King of Kings and the first-nighters received this magnificent deluxe 98-page program, commemorating the theater's grand opening and the film's gala premiere. This prologue included D. W. Griffith as Master of Ceremonies and "Miss Mary Pickford" who would "formally start this evening's performance." The program features wonderful sketches of the theatre, many in color, information about its construction, and even has the original owner's ticket stubs (row 21, aisle E, seats 46 and 48) attached inside on the front page. Minor staining and creasing on the cover; the top staple in the binding has come loose. In overall Very Good condition. A wonderful relic related to probably the most famous movie theatre in the world, a legendary DeMille classic, and what was surely a magical night in the history of classic Hollywood.
