Description

Gone With the Wind Partial Original Script. Partial and original final shooting script for Gone With the Wind, dated January 21, 1939. The 56-page script covers the story from its originally planned opening (a fade-in the novel's jacket cover, and the Chapter One words "Scarlett O'Hara was not beautiful...") to Rhett Butler's mention of the battle of Gettysburg. Cover credits novelist Margaret Mitchell, screenplay writers Sidney Howard (who posthumously received an Oscar for his work) and Oliver H. P. Garrett (who was uncredited on the film), director George Cukor (who was soon replaced by Victor Fleming), and producer Selznick (who won the Best Picture Academy Award, of course, for GWTW). Also, the name "F. Vincent" is written in pencil in the upper right corner -- possibly Frank Vincent, a powerful Hollywood agent who might have secured this script for one or more of his clients eager to land a role in the epic. Selznick had filmed GWTW's burning of Atlanta episode in December of 1938, but officially began shooting the film January 26, 1939 - five days after the date that appears on this script. There's some penciled annotation in the dialogue and the script has some creasing on the cover -- overall Very Fine condition. A wonderful relic from Golden Age Hollywood's most illustrious classic.
