Description

Edgar G. Ulmer's Pirates of Capri Archive. In 1949, Edgar Ulmer visited Italy to direct The Pirates of Capri, starring Louis Hayward. Ulmer's wife Shirley and 12-year old daughter Arianne joined him on location as Ulmer shot the film aboard the Nave Ameriga Vespucci, an actual "school ship" of the Italian Navy, designed after the late-18th-century 74-cannon ships. The Vespucci was launched in 1931 and was later one of the legendary "Long Ships" that toured the world. Ulmer filmed most of the movie on the ship and on actual Rome locales. It was a great adventure for the Ulmer family; during the months in Italy, Arianne vividly recalls taking ballet lessons from Nijinsky's daughter Kyra -- "and learning lots of bad words from the teenage boys who were Vespucci crew members!"

This lot contains: a coin/medallion respectfully presented to Ulmer by the captain of the Vespucci, with one side featuring an image of the ship, the other side an image of Vespucci; Ulmer's colorful, swashbuckler-style original one sheet poster for the film ("For Queen and Country!...The mysterious Captain Sirocco led his pirate hordes...!"), measuring 26.5" x 39" and matted into a 32' x 45' frame; and a painting by Dario Cecchi (the film's costume designer) of the "Pirates of Capri ballet," signed in black at bottom, "To Edgar Ulmer, souvenir of Dario Cecchi Roma 1949." A wonderful, rather sensual color painting shows two men behind camera (one of them presumably Ulmer), one smoking, filming three women in foreground, one of the ladies a quite magnificent voluptuary holding a staff, one of her legs exposed; painting measures 15.5" x 19.5" in a 19.5" x 23.5" wooden frame. Taped to left side of the frame is a 3" x 5.75" newspaper clipping reading, "Gian Carlo Menotti portrayed by Dario Cecchi." The poster has a vertical crease and horizontal creases, and a small split on Louis Hayward's arm; overall Excellent condition for all items. The poster and painting both decorated Ulmer's homes and the lot commemorates one of his most popular mainstream films. From the Edgar G. Ulmer Preservation Corp. Accompanied by an LOA from Arianne Ulmer Cipes. Requires third party shipping.
