Description

Edgar G. Ulmer's One Sheet Poster for St. Benny the Dip. 'The most hilarious mixture of LOVE, LAUGHTER and LARCENY you've ever seen on the screen" promises this original poster for St. Benny the Dip (1951), a comedy Ulmer directed on location in New York City. The trio of Dick Haymes, Lionel Stander, and Roland Young dominate, along with cartoon cops and a small picture of Haymes romancing leading lady Nina Foch; blurb reads: "Hear! Dick Haymes sing 'I Believe.'" Odd to see former child star Freddie Bartholomew (then 26) billed fifth and under the title. Also included is a New York Times cartoon by Kroll, dated May 28, 1950, titled "Filming a Motion Picture on the Sidewalks of New York." Caption reads: "Artist Julius Kroll sketches the cast and curious bystanders as the melodrama (sic) St. Benny the Dip is filmed hereabouts. Left, as visiting vagrants, are Lionel Stander, Dick Haymes and Roland Young. Center, Nina Foch, Freddie Bartholomew and director Edgar Ulmer." Camera, sound crew, mounted policeman, crowds behind barricades, steeple, buildings and bridge in background. Actual newspaper piece measures 8" x 15.5", matted in 14.5" x 18.5" frame. Naturally Ulmer was pleased to receive a caricature in the Times, and the sketch, along with the poster, hung in his various homes. Excellent condition. From the Edgar G. Ulmer Preservation Corp. Accompanied by an LOA from Arianne Ulmer Cipes. Requires third party shipping.
