DescriptionEdgar G. Ulmer's Bluebeard Poster and Archive. In the spring of 1944, Edgar G. Ulmer, who'd long wanted to film a version of Bluebeard, fulfilled his wish at PRC Studios. His star was John Carradine (who actually lived with the Ulmer family at that time, trying to elude an alimony-seeking ex-wife). Ulmer masterfully created 19th-century Paris on the cramped PRC soundstages, and Carradine dynamically delivered what The Hollywood Reporter hailed as "his finest performance." The result was surely the most stylish and sublime "Poverty Row" horror film of the 1940s.
This lot features the Italian one sheet poster for La Follia Di Barbablu, in the very desirable stone cut design, purchased by Arianne Ulmer Cipes from a Spanish collector about fifteen years ago. The poster offers a wonderful image of a Byronic, wild-eyed Carradine, strangling leading lady Jean Parker; the bottom border notes, "Lingografia -- Firenze." Vertical crease with three horizontal creases; some minor wear on the noses of Carradine and Parker; Very Good condition.
Also included is a 16-page typed transcript of Arianne Ulmer Cipes' June 15, 1998 interview with Bob Baker, who was the puppeteer on Bluebeard. A special bonus: an original 7" x 8" black-and-white photograph, taken by Edgar Ulmer, of John Carradine with Sonia Sorel, who played one of his victims in Bluebeard (and who, in 1944, was his real-life lover), reading the newspaper comics by the pool at Hollywood's legendary Garden of Allah. Both are in swim suits; Carradine wears a yachting cap. Also, included is a color photo of Sonia at her 1945 wedding to Carradine (she was the mother of Keith, Robert and Christopher Carradine), pictured with several lady friends and flower girl Arianne. Incidentally, John Carradine, a notorious villain in the movies, was a true hero in the Ulmer household -- he saved Arianne from drowning in the Garden of Allah's pool when she was seven years old. Vivid, fascinating material, all related to one of Ulmer's favorite and most-revived films. From the Edgar G. Ulmer Preservation Corp. Accompanied by an LOA from Arianne Ulmer Cipes.
