Edgar G. Ulmer 1969 Script for a remake of Detour, plus Photo Proofs. Ann Savage's "Vera" of Edgar G. Ulmer's legendary 1945 noir melodrama Detour might still reign as the cinema's top femme fatale-from-Hell. However, Ulmer vowed late in life to go farther -- and he registered this racy rewrite of Detour with the Screen Writers Guild March 24, 1969. "My father very much wanted to remake Detour without worrying about censorship," says Arianne Ulmer Cipes, "and set it against a lat-1960s flower child background."
I"m an alcoholic nympho What can I do?" ponders "Chris" (the new "Vera") in Ulmer's 122-page typed script. Ulmer describes Chris as having "long blond hair, a beautiful face and body, which she enjoys showing off. She has qualities of both sensitivity and sadism." The cast includes various and assorted hippies, teeny-boppers, prostitutes, a topless waitress and "a tall, handsome pimp" named "Robert E. Lee." Although various producers expressed interest in the property -- including Ulmer's devoted admirer Peter Bogdanovich -- Ulmer's Detour for the '60s never saw production.
Also included in the lot is a proof sheet, showing Arianne Ulmer and Ann Savage (who died in 2008) together at a screening of Detour in recent years. "Ann Savage was a very good friend in our family," says Arianne, "and one of the few friends who stayed close after my Dad's illness."
Incidentally, in the Detour rewrite, the classic phone cord climax happily remained. A fascinating curio from the twisted world of cinema noir -- and the dark genius of Edgar G. Ulmer. From the Edgar G. Ulmer Preservation Corp. Accompanied by an LOA from Arianne Ulmer Cipes.
