Description

Boris Karloff in 1968: Life, Red Skelton, and Jonathan Winters. At the age of 80, Boris Karloff was still a major star, and quite a gallant one. This lot includes the cover of the March 15, 1968 Life magazine, which featured the headline "Happy 150th, Dear Frankenstein," and a cover photo of Karloff's face hovering above the birthday candles. Attached is the article, "Happy Sesquicentennial, Dear Monster," by Samuel Rosenberg. (A negative is included of the birthday shot.) In September, he was a guest star with Vincent Price on The Red Skelton Show. Karloff was in a wheelchair then, and when he sensed the audience's sympathy for him diluted the show's humor, he bravely played the show on his feet with the aid of a cane. Here are two very rare color rehearsal shots from that show, one 3" x 5" with the photographer's stamp en verso and one 8" x 10", both showing Karloff, Price, and Skelton. Karloff also guest-starred on The Jonathan Winters Show that October, movingly singing "It Was a Very Good Year," and here is Karloff's own sheet music, with pencil marks he made for accents and emphasis. Also included in sheet music for "September Song," which he possibly sang on another program. "I intend to die with my boots and my greasepaint on," Karloff insisted, and he came close -- on February 2, 1969, a little over three months after The Jonathan Winters Show appearance, he died in London. Moving material in Fine to Very Fine condition. From the Boris Karloff Estate Collection. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from Sara Karloff Sparkman.
