Description
Atlanta Summer Olympics Torch and Dual Signed USA Nike Sneakers by Jackie Joyner-Kersee (1996). Original group of items from the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics including (1) Official 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics torch, constructed of gold-plated brass, aluminum, and Georgian pecan hardwood, measuring 31.75" in length and 2.5" at its widest point and (1) pair of autographed size 10 sneakers signed by multiple gold-winning Olympic track and field champion Jackie Joyner-Kersee. The official Olympic torch was designed by Peter Mastrogiannis and traveled from Greece and across the United States in a relay from Los Angeles to all the major US cities, along the old Pony Express route, where it was held by community leaders. Muhammad Ali was the final person to hold the torch in the relay, lighting the massive cauldron and launching the 1996 Summer Games in Atlanta. The wooden handle represents the connection of the flame between heaven and earth, and the torch's twenty-two reeds, representing every host city of the Olympic Games since 1896, are gathered by bands at the top and bottom, with the top displaying the Atlanta Games logo and the quilt of leaves design, and the bottom band listing all Olympic cities and their dates since 1896. The left shoe has Kersee's signature written with black ink on the toe cap. The right shoe has Kersee's signature on the lateral heel with "Jackie J. Kersee 96" written in black ink. Both signatures are slightly faded. The Olympic torch exhibits display wear. Sneakers exhibit game wear.
