A Marilyn Monroe Group of Black and White Snapshots of Her Chihuahua, "Josefa," 1953. Three total; all vintage prints with a glossy finish; the first depicts a woman with two girls and MM's tiny pup, verso has a penciled annotation (not in MM's hand) reading "June 1953 / Smithe & grandchildren / "Josefa;" the second depicts the same woman with MM's pup and another dog, verso has similar penciled annotation reading "June 1953 / "Josefa" / & Tippy / (Fox Terrier from next door);" the third depicts a different angle of same woman and dogs, verso has similar penciled annotation reading "June 1953 / Josefa / & Tippy / who tried to / "dog" the / camera!/ Her playmate;" included is a small photographer's envelope that these snapshots are housed in, though it has an earlier date -- the front reads in part "Pete Reyes / Photographer / Official Photographer for Santa Catalina Island" and has further penciled annotations noting "4/14/44" and "N. Dougherty" -- evidently it was used for other snapshots that the 17 year-old Norma Jeane got developed when she lived on Catalina Island with her first husband. (Please note the image of MM with "Josefa" is NOT part of this lot - it is being used here only to show that MM did own this dog.)
    Snapshots: 3 1/2" x 5"

Marilyn Monroe named her female Chihuahua "Josefa" in honor of 20th Century Fox chairman, Joseph M. Schenck, who gave the dog to her as a gift around 1948. From these snapshots, it seems likely that MM later gave the dog to this Mrs. Smithe to care for, and that Smithe kept MM up to date about "Josefa" over the years. Oddly, the terrier in these snapshots is named "Tippy," the same name as MM's childhood dog.

The movie quite literally changed my life. I have included a pic of me in Sly's Rocky 3 Cashmere overcoat, would much appreciate if it is possible for you to forward this email to Sly to let him know the overcoat is in good hands, and will be well taken care of, (as will be the Rambo knife forging tools, the other lot I won!) Wish you very happy holidays and a great 2016!
