Remigius Weiss aided Houdini on his quest to debunk fraudulent mediums and spiritualists, and from the correspondence between the two, it appears that they were quite close -- possibly even blood relatives as Houdini was born Erik Weisz, but used the spelling "Weiss" as did his other family members.
