    Description

A Group of Correspondence Related to the Harvard Lampoon Roasting, 1973. Including: 1) a letter typed on three pages of The Harvard Lampoon letterhead, sent to JW in Hollywood, CA, dated "December 5, 1973," regarding a "challenge" to Wayne to come to Harvard to premiere his new movie, reading in part "We've heard you're supposed to be some kind of legend. / Everybody talks about your he-man prowess...your / unsurpassed greatness in the guts department. But we at the / Harvard Lampoon tend to doubt it... / You think you're tough? You're not so tough. You've never / pored through dozens of critical volumes on imagist poetry.../ You've never had to do three papers and a midterm all for / one course," and ending with "And you better make up your mind fast, Wayne -- we've got / Maureen O'Hara tied up in our basement;" 2) a file copy of Wayne's response letter, dated "December 11, 1973," reading in part "I shall be most happy to stop by your campus on my way to / London to visit the original college whose name you have assumed / and whose breeding and manners you haven't been able to buy;" 3) seven pages of "Suggested Remarks for John Wayne at Harvard" from Paul W. Keyes, a comedy writer; and 4) a handful of newspaper clippings about the event [on January 15, 1973] which, by most accounts, was a success for the good-humored Wayne.
