A Bette Davis Pair of Decorative Items, 1960s. Two pieces; the first a print titled "The Tomb of Shakspere" [sic]; the second a ceramic souvenir plate with an image of William Shakespeare in the center surrounded by images of places associated with him (e.g. The Globe Theatre, Stratford-Upon-Avon, etc.), back stamped "Britannia / Ltd. / Designs / Dartmouth / England;" both bought by the star while in England and on display in various homes where she lived over the years; also included is a framed oversized image of the USPS 'Bette Davis Stamp' which was given to Kathryn Sermak in 2008 [Davis' longtime assistant] who attended the stamp's unveiling festivities; further included is a signed 'letter of provenance' from Sermak.
    15" x 16"; 10" diameter; and 19" x 14"

    Kathryn Sermak relays this story:
"The most important piece in this lot is the Shakespearean plate. It really was used as Miss D's ashtray and was always on the pine French table in the living room. She would be talking on the phone while smoking and constantly putting out the cigarette and lightening a new one. The other ashtrays were smaller - therefore they would constantly have to be cleaned. This only had to be cleaned a few times during the day.

The print Stratford Upon Avon Miss D saw it in a shop and liked it. It was my first trip with her to work on the film, Watcher in the Woods and we took a motor trip so she could educate me on England when we weren't working. She adored England and always brought a souvenir home telling the story of her trip which made her home warm and like a museum."
