"Icons of Addis Ababa" Oil Painting by Balazs Szabo
    Benefitting Mercury One

Original painting, oil on canvas, "Icons of Addis Ababa," by artist Balazs Szabo.

Artist's description: My life altering trip to Ethiopia's capital city in 2008 inspired me to convey the beauty of the people and the vibrant colors of the city despite its deep poverty. Most of the 4 million residents live in shacks made from sheets of corrugated metal without water or electricity. People worship Gods that have long abandoned them.

Despite all the suffering they find love toward each other and the faithful orthodox Christians, Muslims and Orthodox Jews live in harmony. My impressions of the organized chaos and the pulsating colors are expressed here. The inserted faces within the abstract are "Iconized" of the beautiful Ethiopians by color rather than the traditional silver framing of the Byzantine era.

    Dimensions: 6' x 9'
