DescriptionKevin Costner "Jake" Matched Pair of Screen-Used Arvo Ojala-Customized Colt Third Generation Single Action Army Revolvers from Silverado with Arvo Ojala's Personal Double-Holster Fast-Draw Rig (Columbia, 1985). Serial no's. SA26317 & SA51058. Cal. 45 Colt. Revolvers are nearly identical with nickel finish, 4 3/4-inch barrels, slightly altered front sights, one line block letter addresses with model and caliber markings on the left side. They have two-line, three patent dates on the left side of the frame with the Rampant Colt. They are mounted with faux pearl grips with gold Colt medallions.
These revolvers were altered and tuned by famous Hollywood fast-draw artist and shooting instructor Arvo Ojala.
In addition to having the action tuned and smoothed with very light trigger pull, the hammer spurs have been altered to left and right offsets with completely smooth spurs. This pair of revolvers was acquired directly from Arvo Ojala in 1987, and Arvo included his personal double-holster fast-draw buscadero rig that he had created for himself under his own patent and actually wore on the set while filming Silverado, instructing the actors in the art of fast draw and shooting.
The rig consists of a double-layered belt of heavy leather about 37 in. long with sewn-on tongue and buckle billets which contain custom Arvo Ojala brass buckle. The holster drops contain left- and right-hand fast draw holsters made of the same heavy leather with hammer thongs and leg latigos. The belt is marked with Mr. Ojala's maker's cartouche inside the belt as well as inside each holster. The back center of the belt is mounted with twenty 44/45 caliber cartridge loops containing nickeled .45 Colt cartridges. The inside center of the belt is carved in raised brown-stained letters, "ARVO OJALA."
This pair of Colts, belt and holster rig were displayed in the "Colt and Its Collectors" exhibition at the Cody Firearms Museum, sponsored by The Colt Collectors Association, May through October 2003. In addition, these revolvers, belt and holster rig are pictured in the book Colt and Its Collectors.
Accompanied with a notarized and signed letter by Arvo Ojala on his personal letterhead wherein he states that these revolvers, identified by serial numbers, were, "specially customized by me for fast draw" and "also, this pair of guns was used by Kevin Costner to do his fast and fancy shooting in the film." The letter additionally states, "I used this black customized double gun rig coaching Kevin Costner, Scott Glenn and Kevin Klein for the movie."
Revolvers are extremely fine, retaining virtually all of their fine nickel finish. Grips are sound and clean with minor handling and use scratch on the left side of one revolver. Hammers are not solid in the safety notches, otherwise, mechanics are fine with bright, shiny bores. Belt and holster rig is equally crisp and clean.
