Juanita Hall's 1949-50 Tony Award, the First Ever Awarded to an African-American. Most often remembered for her roles in various Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, actress Juanita Hall broke social barriers in 1950 when she became the first African-American to win this Tony Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Bloody Mary in South Pacific. (She later reprised the part in the 1958 film version, though her singing of "Bali Hai" and "Happy Talk" was dubbed, at Richard Rodgers' request, by Muriel Smith who had played the role in the London production.) Though the awards were established in 1947, it wasn't until 1949 that the first medallions were actually presented to winners, making this one of the earliest Tony awards handed out. The award is in Excellent condition, and is accompanied by a 64-page hardback making-of book detailing the production of the 1958 movie (Fine condition).
