Joan of Arc near-complete Ingrid Bergman hero suit of armor with production-made helmet. (RKO, 1948) Hand-hammered and formed aluminum French medieval-period suit of armor worn by Ingrid Bergman as "Joan" throughout most of the central scenes in Joan of Arc. Of the two near-complete suits which are known to survive, this one is presumed to be the "action" example, which although exhibiting more signs of original screen production use, it benefits from being slightly more complete in the smaller details such as gloves and shoes. The helmet, which has the exact same shape and style as that worn by Bergman on screen, differs in having breathing holes on both cheeks (hers were only on right cheek) making this either a production alternate, or a male co-star's screen-worn helmet. It is inscribed inside by the credited armor-builder for this film "MCMXXXXVII (sic) MADE BY LEONARD HEINRICH". Both leg sets retain a trace of red grease-crayon marking "I B" for Ingrid Bergman, and both hip shields appear to be marked in same crayon "L" and "R". The intricately segmented shoes and gloves are remarkably intact, retaining most of their cloth and leather interiors, with expected desiccation to soles and palms, while majority of leather fastening-straps throughout rest of armor are separating or absent. Some of the original chain-mail elements are present including shoulder drape (missing hood) and hips, and all things considered, the entire suit is surprisingly well-preserved and in very good to fine condition.
