Jean Louis original costume sketch of Marilyn Monroe as "Roslyn Taber" for The Misfits. (UA, 1961) Designer Jean Louis was responsible specifically for the dresses and gowns of Marilyn Monroe's character "Roslyn Taber" in The Misfits, and the single-most iconic and memorable outfit for Monroe in the entire film is represented here in this original design sketch of the "cherry" sheath dress. Marilyn immortalizes it by playing her own special take on children's paddleball, in front of dozens of drunken cowboys, as only Marilyn filling a form-fitting dress in motion could do. Executed in pencil, India ink and gouache on 8.375 x 11 in. illustration paper, tipped to gray backing paper, which is hinged to 13 x 15.75 in. mat. Signed neatly by Jean Louis just below his secondary detail illustration of Marilyn in matching scarf. Trace of mat burn at extreme margins of sketch, otherwise in fine to very fine condition.
