James Mason "Captain Nemo" signature "Nautilus" uniform jacket from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. (Disney, 1954) Science fiction author Jules Verne's "Captain Nemo" is perhaps the most famous antihero in literature. The son of a Hindu Raja and a descendant of a Muslim Sultan, Nemo lost his family and kingdom during the First Indian War of Independence and devoted himself to scientific research and developed the fantastic Nautilus submarine. The mysterious Captain Nemo is seen wearing his signature blue uniform jacket when he is first introduced to Ned Land, Conseil and Professor Aronnax (Kirk Douglas, Peter Lorre and Paul Lukas) and he continues wearing it in various scenes throughout the film. Since its use in the 1954 film, the braiding with nautilus shells on the jacket sleeves were removed, leaving telltale impressions in the fabric. Nemo was the only character to possess this distinctive braiding. Utilizing production photographs for reference, the braiding has been meticulously recreated bringing the costume back to its screen appearance. This jacket has been in the collection of an esteemed 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea collector for the past 40 years and, when acquired, the brass buttons had been replaced for use in a subsequent production. This signature costume piece remains in production used fine condition. This adaptation of Jules Verne's classic novel was Disney's first science fiction film and the only film of the genre personally produced by Walt Disney. Interestingly, it was Walt who chose the more conservative naval attire for Captain Nemo, as he was originally approached by costume designers with a more flamboyant, pirate-style garb that Disney didn't feel reflected the character of the enigmatic captain of the Nautilus. This is the first "Captain Nemo" costume piece we have ever handled.
