Hero "Nautilus" crewman "baldy style" dive helmet from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. (Disney, 1954) Few films have captured the imagination of viewers like Disney's 1954 epic science fiction adventure 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, adapted from Jules Verne's book of the same name. The film's production designer was the legendary Harper Goff-one of the primary designers of Disneyland. The interior / exterior design of Capt. Nemo's fantastic Nautilus and its futuristic (for the 19th Century) equipment fused the elegance of the Victorian-era with the Industrial Age. This is an incredibly rare Nautilus "baldy style" crewman underwater dive helmet, distinguished by its lack of a "crown" top seen on the majority of Nautilus divers. Production made only five "baldy style" helmets for the film (there were twelve "crowntop" helmets created). Based on a vintage copper Japanese sponge diver helmet, Goff's design team modified the look by hand-crafting a copper cowling in the front with "gills" on the sides. The helmet comes with the original copper breastplate which attaches by a screw mechanism (brass rings and unique square nut fitments are present, with the exception of a single nut in the back). Measures 16 in. tall x 13.5 in. wide (mounted on breastplate). 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was Disney's first science fiction film, and the only film of the genre personally produced by Walt Disney. This is the most complete Nautilus dive helmet we have seen. All parts are original with the exception of the left "horn" which was missing and later replaced using copper sheeting, per the original, and the top of the helmet has been repainted. Most of the dive helmets from this underwater epic were eventually scrapped with only a handlful surviving. This is the only "baldy style" dive helmet we have ever encountered. Special shipping arrangements will apply. Provenance: Acquired from Disney in the early 1970s by famous radio/TV singer Harry Babbitt and has remained in his family ever since.
