Gone With the Wind Screen-Used Side Chair. From what is perhaps the most beloved epic story ever brought to the silver screen, presented here is a side chair used in the making of the 1939 classic Gone With The Wind, and highly visible among Rhett Butler's elaborate dining room set. In one of the most intense sequences of the film, Rhett, surrounded by the chairs, declares to Scarlett: "Observe my hands, my dear. I could tear you to pieces with them. And I'd do it if it would take Ashley out of your mind forever." The oak side chair embodies the rich massive style of Butler's Reconstruction-era mansion and measures 35" x 20" x 21.75". In Very Fine condition with some nicking, minor decorative loss, and separating of decorative joints. Originally acquired from the historic MGM auction of props and wardrobe, the side chair was subsequently displayed in the rare book store Heritage Book Shop (not affiliated with Heritage Auctions) in West Hollywood. Accompanying the lot is a New York Times article on Heritage Book Shop referencing the chair and its inclusion in Gone With the Wind, as well as images of the piece in the film. Opulent, iconic... and if you don't win the bidding, "Tomorrow is another day!"
